HENRIQUE VIEIRA

Henrique Vieira studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, where he completed his Master’s degree. He has developed a set of complementary skills forged through a varied professional path. In recent years, he has dedicated himself to research on light, connecting historical, artistic and technical perspectives. This work culminated in the formulation of an operative framework in which light is understood as an active agent within architectural space.

MANUEL ALÃO

Manuel Alão is an Architectural Lighting Designer based in Porto, Portugal, with over 20 years of experience creating light for museums, theaters, restaurants, and private residences. His work blends technical precision with creative vision, shaping spaces that are both functional and emotionally engaging. He has also designed light sculptures for festivals and served as technical director for theaters and cultural events, managing complex projects and large teams.

Light as a Hidden Powerful Force revealed as a Spatial Experience

Magma is a lighting design studio rooted in the quiet dialogue between light and shadow. Inspired by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki and his reflections on In Praise of Shadows, we believe illumination should be treated with conscience and parcimony; as an atmosphere, shaping spaces through contrast, depth, and subtle glow.

Like molten matter beneath the surface, Magma represents a light that is revealed slowly, allowing shadow to define form and light to evoke emotion. We create luminous environments where darkness carries presence — a space for texture, silence, and contemplation.

Our lighting integrates seamlessly within the architecture, elevating its identity and enhancing the experience of those who inhabit it. Each project becomes a composed interplay of light, space, and perception — timeless, precise, and deeply felt.

From this standpoint, we approach each project as a unified whole. This allows us to operate beyond lighting design — where spatial composition and corporate identity can be carefully shaped to reflect its narrative and values.
